Project Title: Per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) leaching from yard waste compost

Project Summary: The study found significant PFAS contamination in yard waste compost, dominated by certain chemical groups and especially short-chain compounds. More soluble PFAS were concentrated at deeper layers, showing they move downward through the compost. This transport is partly aided by dissolved organic matter and transformation of precursor compounds. Overall, the results indicate compost can allow PFAS to leach into soil and potentially groundwater.
