Project Title: Formation and decay of disinfection byproducts (DBP) in water distribution systems
Fellow: Mohsin Uddin

Project summary: Clean drinking water is vital for public health. Disinfectants used in treatment can react with organic matter to form byproducts like trihalomethanes (THMs), which may be harmful at high levels. These chemicals can also form in pipes, where pH and corrosion affect their amounts. In tests with chlorine-treated water and copper corrosion particles, higher pH and more copper increased THM levels. This study shows that both pipe conditions and water chemistry can significantly influence the quality and safety of drinking water.
