Carrington REC 2025 Foundation Seedstock Varieties

Authored on
Body

The CREC Foundation Seedstock team started planting on April 24, 2025. Field work progressed as well as possible in between showers. The 51 rain day events, plenty of fog and about 18.50 inches of rainfall from April through September provided plenty of opportunity for the potential of plant disease. This made for a busy spray season.

Here is an update on the status of foundation grade seed stocks available at the Carrington Research Extension Center. With seed conditioning in progress, we will be able to offer you a wide range of varieties for this spring.

Our inventory will feature three new varieties. NDSU has two more new wheats released from Dr. Andrew Green’s wheat program and the North Dakota Crop Improvement and Seed Association has a new barley from Canada released by SeCan.

  • ND Horizon is adapted to the east (ND); in the Red River Valley locations it has similar yield and protein to ND Stampede but with shorter stature and better straw strength.
  • ND Roughrider is a far western (ND) wheat with high yield potential, especially in drier conditions.
  • CDC Churchill is a very high yielding two-row malting variety with strong straw strength and low protein.

For any NDCISA seed order requests, make sure you are either a member or (if needed) an associate of the NDCISA, to have access to their varieties from the CREC.

If you are interested in any of these varieties, Carrington REC at 701-652-2951 or Dave Copenhaver at 701-652-5853. Other cultivars and additional quantities may be available from other Research Extension Centers and the Agronomy Seed Farm.

The NDSU Foundation Seedstocks Pricing Committee has met and will publish the seed prices for the spring of 2026 in the near future. Within the NDSU Foundation Seedstocks program, seed orders received by December 1 will be given preference and priority when allocating foundation seed.
