Two down, more to go

We finished our signature tour event of the season last week with our 67th annual field day at the Carrington REC, but we’re only getting started with plot tours. Also last week, our pathology crew hosted an on-farm plot study tour near Makoti.

Coming up, we are looking forward to three more off-station plot tours, co-hosted with local Extension agents with the support of our local cooperators, and our annual field day at the Oakes Irrigation Research Site.

We look forward to these local events, where we can literally rub shoulders with producers, on their soil, near their fields. We see their crops each time we travel to our off-station plots, and learn more each time we visit.

Our local NDSU Extension county agents and county crop improvement associations are crucial to the success of these off station research sites! Their boots on the ground help us develop research topics and they are our eyes and ears on a daily basis. Extension agents also take care of meal arrangements and collaborate with sponsors, and we are grateful for their partnership!

Dazey Plot Tour
  • Date: Thursday, July 23
  • Location: 2.5 miles east of Dazey on Highway 26.
  • Time: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (CDT)

  • Comments: For the first time in recent history, Dazey will have the full complement of all the wheat varieties in the statewide trial. Ceres, the first NDSU wheat release (1926) is part of the trial. Come check out what a difference a century has had on wheat varieties. If you are interested in on farm research, we are looking for volunteer producers to test new algorithms for variable rate planting and fertility.
Tri-County Plot Tour (Logan, Emmons, McIntosh)
  • Date: Tuesday, July 28
  • Location: 6 miles west of Wishek on Highway 13.
  • Time: 6:30 p.m. supper (please RSVP); tour 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. (CDT)
  • County Hosts: Josh Becker, NDSU Logan and McIntosh County Extension, and Nancy Deis, Emmons County Extension.
  • Local cooperator: Lyle Bettenhausen

Fingal Plot Tour

  • Location: 6 miles west of Fingal on Barnes County 34 (45th Street SE) OR 11 miles south of I-94 Exit 296 (Peak) on Barnes County 27 (121st Avenue SE).
  • Time: 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. (CDT)

  • Comments: Corn, corn, corn. The Fingal plot is known for corn performance tests, and we are still going. We added a cover crop in corn trial and a nitrogen fractionation study. What’s nitrogen fractionation? Come see us and find out!

We’d love to see you at any of all of these events! NDSU is committed to providing accommodations, but requests (to the County agents) must be made at least two weeks prior to the event.

If you miss us at our scheduled plot tours, do stop at the sites at any time and refer to QR codes posted in the plots. You can always call us or stop by the Carrington REC for a visit, too.
