2027 Foundation Seedstock Varieties at Carrington REC
The CREC 2026 growing season started out nearly perfect. Lower fall and winter moisture totals allowed for whole fields to be planted this spring, and early-planted crops took advantage of additional spring moisture with decent yields. Later crops yielded less as a result of inadequate moisture. Early crop fungicide was applied after many foggy morning events.
For your spring 2027 seed planting needs, listed below are the foundation grade seed stock varieties that the CREC has available in our inventory:

*ND Gladiator durum was developed by NDSU’s durum breeder, Dr. Elias Elias. It possesses high yield potential with excellent quality, protein content and semolina extraction. ND Gladiator has a low cadmium uptake that is second only to ND Grano and has high test weight and larger kernel size. Straw height and strength compares with Divide and Joppa with low levels of leaf and stem rust severity.
*CDC Vantta durum was developed in Canada and licensed by NDCISA. CDC Vannta is a semi dwarf, strong strawed, black awned variety with high yield potential. It has a superior pasta color for excellent end use; it is a low cadmium variety with a high falling number and strong gluten strength.
*ND Arista barley was developed by NDSU’s barley breeder, Dr. Rich Horsley. A two-row barley with high yield potential. In comparison to ND Genesis and AAC Synergy, ND Arista’s straw is shorter and stronger; heading is earlier and harvest dry down is quicker. ND Arista is the first GN-free (Glycosidic Nitrile-free) barley variety developed, an important consideration for good distillation.
*PG Cash is a semi-leafless yellow pea developed by Premier Genetics. PG Cash features statewide adaptability and exhibits excellent standability, above average yield and medium maturity. It has a good balance between high yield and high protein content.
*ND Dakota buckwheat was developed at the Carrington Research Extension Center by Steve Zwinger. It is a tall, open pollinated indeterminate plant with white flowers that bloom in 38 days. Best performance is under organic management. Yields are comparable to Manor and Koto.
