Fall 2023 MOS Application 

Application Process

  • Interested students should fill out the online application. Students may apply for more than one reading group with the same application.
  • Students may respond to essay prompts with typed responses or by uploading a video.
  • Students will be notified via email if they have been selected to participate in a reading group.

Application Timeline

  • The deadline to submit an online application is May 12. 
  • Scholars accepted into the reading group will be notified via email by June 1.
  • Accepted scholars must respond to the invitation via email.

Students may apply for multiple reading groups. Please use the above link for all applications. If you are interested in more than one reading group, please indicate your interest on the application. You do not need to submit multiple applications. If you have any questions, please email ndsu.pcpe@ndsu.edu 

Reading Groups

Bowling Alone: Revised and Updated

Tuesdays 4-5 p.m.  |  Led by  Dr. Thomas Krumel

Social capital is needed for economic growth and a flourishing society. In this reading group, scholars will explore the concept of social capital and the reasons it has declined in the U.S. Students will discuss the role that declining social capital has had on rural communities and manufacturing communities throughout the rustbelt.This fall 2023 Mancur Olson Reading Group, titled Bowling Alone: Revised and Updated, is open to all NDSU undergraduate students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. At the end of the program, each participant will receive a $500 scholarship.

 

Meetings: Tuesdays from 4:00 - 5:00 p.m.

The Digital Revolution 

Wednesdays 5-6 p.m.  |  Led by Dr. Oudum Hean

How is technology reshaping our world and what does this mean for our future? I this reading group, scholars will explore these questions and topics relating to: artificial intelligence, virtual reality and the Internet of Things. Group discussion will deepen our understanding of how these innovations are transforming industries and changing how we live, work, and communicate.This fall 2023 Mancur Olson Reading Group, titled The Digital The Digital Revolution, is open to all NDSU undergraduates with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. At the end of the program, each participant will receive a $500 scholarship.

Meetings: Wednesdays from 5:00 - 6:00 p.m.

Judgment and Decision Making 

Thursdays 5-6 p.m.  |  Led by Dr. Alfredo Roa-Henriquez

In this reading group we discuss how people make judgments and decisions, and explore different mechanisms that aim to improve the quality of people’s choices. Finally, we engage in a debate to provide other perspectives on the policy implications of behavioral economics.This fall 2023 Mancur Olson Reading Group, titled The Digital Judgment and Decision Making, is open to all NDSU undergraduates with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. At the end of the program, each participant will receive a $500 scholarship.
