Study Abroad

See the World. Change Your Perspective.

Expand your understanding of criminal justice through international study and travel. We offer students the opportunity to explore criminal justice systems around the world while gaining firsthand insight into different cultures and approaches to justice.

The program combines classroom learning with international travel. During the spring semester, students enroll in a course focused on the history, culture and criminal justice system of the destination country. In May, students travel abroad with faculty to visit criminal justice agencies, meet professionals in the field and experience the country's culture firsthand.

Led by Dr. Amy Stichman, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice, past study abroad experiences have taken students to destinations including Italy, England, Belgium, the Netherlands and several Scandinavian countries. These immersive experiences provide a unique opportunity to broaden perspectives, build global awareness and explore criminal justice beyond the United States.

2022 Criminal Justice Study Abroad: Scandinavia

In May 2022, Criminal Justice students traveled with Dr. Amy Stichman to Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Norway to explore how criminal justice systems in Scandinavia compare to those in the United States.

Before traveling, students completed a spring semester course focused on Scandinavian culture and justice systems, examining topics such as policing, courts, corrections, language, food and social policies. The international experience then brought these concepts to life through site visits, professional presentations and cultural immersion.

Helsinki, Finland

Students met with members of the Helsinki Police Department, learning about policing practices and community relationships in Finland. The group also explored historic landmarks, including Helsinki Cathedral and the unique Temppeliaukio Church, carved directly into solid rock.

Stockholm, Sweden

In Stockholm, students toured the city’s waterways, visited the Swedish Parliament and explored several museums, including the world-famous Vasa Museum. They also observed police officers using Segways for patrol and learned about the city's history through a guided walking tour of Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s Old Town.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Students attended a criminal court proceeding and later met with an attorney who explained Denmark’s legal system and answered questions about courtroom procedures. The group also experienced Danish culture through local food tours, historic sites and city attractions.

Oslo, Norway

One of the most memorable experiences was a visit to Halden Prison, internationally recognized for its innovative approach to corrections and rehabilitation. Students toured the facility, met with prison staff and incarcerated individuals, and learned about Norway’s correctional philosophy. The visit was rated as a favorite experience by participants.

The group also explored Oslo’s museums, including the Munch Museum and Fram Museum, and visited Vigeland Sculpture Park, one of Norway’s most iconic attractions.

The Scandinavian Study Abroad program provides students with a unique opportunity to examine criminal justice from a global perspective. By engaging directly with law enforcement professionals, legal practitioners, and correctional institutions, students gain valuable insights into different approaches to justice, rehabilitation, and public safety while experiencing new cultures and countries firsthand.
