REU Experience

On Tuesday, May 26, 2026 REU participants will walk the NDSU campus as part of their orientation to our community. Students will meet with their mentors, tour the campus, and end the day with a welcome BBQ at a local park.

Throughout the 10 weeks, students will:

  • Meet regularly with project mentor(s)
  • Meet regularly with their cohort to build research skills, communication skills, and content knowledge
  • Conduct independent research (approximately 40 hours per week)
  • Have fun!

In the final week, students formally present their research through a campus-wide poster symposium. Students depart NDSU on Saturday, August 1. Outstanding posters may receive funding to attend and present at a national conference in the 2026-27 academic year.

Interested in our program? Please apply! (see REU Application page for guidance on applying). A panel of faculty and students will review all applications and notify accepted applicants in spring. Accepted REU participants will begin building a network of colleagues and collaborators right away!

CiDER begins Tuesday, May 26, 2026. Participants are expected to arrive prior to May 26 to ensure time to settle into on-campus housing and the Fargo Community. Travel to Fargo via (1) Hector International Airport, (2) Amtrak, or (3) by car.

Unfortunately, the REU is open only to those students who retain their undergraduate status throughout the summer of our program.

NSF restricts REU programs to students who are U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or permanent residents of the United States.

We anticipate accepting 10 undergraduates this year.

We do request that all students arrive in Fargo in time for our May start date. This helps to build the cohort experience and make sure you are settled in and ready to go! If you have a conflict, please reach out to us as we may be able to make an accommodation.

You will reside in our Living/Learning Center, which is adjacent to the Wallman Wellness Center.
