Background

The CEASE research team has been funded consistently at the North Dakota State University since 2014 to conduct research in tobacco prevention and control, including tobacco free environments, evaluation of electronic cigarettes, and systems change for nicotine and dependence treatment. The primary funder has been the North Dakota Health and Human Services (NDHHS) Tobacco Prevention and Control Program. NDDHHS is providing funding for CEASE to support North Dakota’s Comprehensive Tobacco Prevention and Control State Plan. The State Plan is based on the Centers for Disease Control Best Practices for Comprehensive Tobacco Control Programs. In recognition of the multi-disciplinary faculty contributing to the grant from multiple NDSU departments and colleges, in 2025, we agreed to name ourselves CEASE. CEASE is an acronym for: Collaborative Efforts for Actions in Stopping and Ending tobacco/nicotine use.

Since July of 2024, our work has focused primarily on the NDQuits Youth Treatment Initiative, in collaboration with others, to develop an educational intervention for adolescent health care clinicians to provide nicotine dependence treatment to youth populations. We also assist with other treatment and system change initiatives and strive to quickly disseminate our findings.

The CEASE research teams’ work has been cited numerous times, including in two reports by the U.S. Surgeon General: the 2016 U.S. Surgeon General Report: E-cigarettes Use Among Youth and Young Adults (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK538680) and the 2024 report: Eliminating Tobacco-Related Disease and Death: Addressing Disparities.
