Shape Your Future
NDSU students are encouraged to collaborate with an advisor and develop a unique program of study that meets their specific interests.
Two Tracks to Fit Your Interest
Customize your degree by choosing a robotics track that matches your interests while gaining a full understanding of automated systems. The programming-focused track emphasizes coding, robot programming and system integration, while the mechanical-focused track centers on machines, tooling, fluid power and hands-on hardware. Both paths ensure you understand the entire robot cell — from concept to operation.
Designed with Industry Demand in Mind
Robotics and automation employers need graduates who can contribute on day one. This program was built in direct response to industry input, emphasizing the skills companies hire for most — robot integration, PLC programming, electrical troubleshooting, systems thinking and collaboration. You’ll graduate with hands-on experience across industrial robotics, controls, motion systems, safety and digital automation technologies.
Applied Automation Challenge: Real-World Experience Early
In your third year, you’ll take part in a two-semester Applied Automation Challenge unlike anything else in the region. Working in teams, students receive a customer-style automation brief, design and build automated solutions, simulate systems using digital twin technology and compete with a fully integrated robotic workcell. This experience builds a professional portfolio and provides real-world skills most graduates don’t gain until after they’re hired.
Capstone Projects with Industrial Hardware
Your senior-year capstone brings everything together through a real industrial automation project. You’ll design, build and program a complete automated system using industry-grade hardware — PLCs, robots, drives and HMIs — while validating safety, performing testing and delivering documentation and training. The result is a career-ready experience that mirrors the expectations of modern automation and robotics roles.
