Welcome to Spanish and Global Studies
We are home to the Spanish major, including a teacher education track, and NDSU's full, year-round English-as-a-Second-Language program. Coordination of the Global Studies Major is also housed in the department.
While the primary goal for the Spanish major is that students attain a high level of proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in the language, there is also a strong emphasis on history, culture, literature, and Spanish for the professions. We encourage majors to take advantage of course offerings in areas such as history, anthropology, sociology, political science, global studies, linguistics, and the fine arts, which will strengthen inter-cultural competency through a broad understanding of diverse cultures and peoples.
The teacher education track available to students majoring in Spanish is designed to provide prospective teachers with a strong academic foundation and the instructional skills necessary to become effective, inquiring, and adaptable teachers.
In Global Studies, students engage critically with global issues, hone verbal and written communication skills essential in a global marketplace and society, and develop intercultural competence necessary to make a positive difference in the world. The interdisciplinary global studies major combines a set of required core courses, a foreign language component, and a diverse series of electives from disciplines such as economics, English, history, philosophy, political science, religion, anthropology, and sociology. The Global Studies major offers flexibility and can easily be combined with another major or several minors.
Study abroad is required of Spanish and Global Studies majors.
