Athletic training student builds confidence and career at NDSU

NDSU Athletic Trainer Kenzie Norgren

Growing up in sports, Kenzie Norgren saw firsthand how athletic trainers protect athletes, manage injuries and keep teams performing at their best.

From preventing and evaluating injuries, to assisting with rehabilitation, athletic trainers play a crucial role in keeping athletes safe by reducing injury risk and ensuring athletes are performing at their best.

What started as admiration soon became a passion for Norgren who knew she wanted to enter the career field. NDSU’s Master of Athletic Training degree program has been a perfect fit for Norgren, as she has thrived both personally and professionally on campus.

“My experience in the athletic training program at NDSU has been nothing short of amazing. I’ve been able to form meaningful connections with classmates, professors and preceptors, all of whom are incredibly supportive and genuinely want to see us succeed,” said Norgren, who is from Annandale, Minnesota. “It feels like a small community – almost like a family – where you can go to anyone for help, guidance or encouragement. That support has made learning and growing in the program such a positive and rewarding experience.”

The athletic training program’s comprehensive curriculum covers prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries resulting from physical activity. After completing the program, students are eligible to take the Board of Certification, Inc. exam. The ATC credential is awarded upon successful completion of the BOC exam.

In addition to classroom learning, students receive practical hands-on experience through clinical education sites where they can apply the knowledge, skills and clinical abilities they’ve learned on an actual patient base with feedback from professors.

Being able to directly apply classroom concepts in real-world settings has been instrumental in preparing Norgren for her future career while building confidence.

“Athletic training is extremely hands-on, and I’ve found that trial and error is truly the best way to learn. The clinical sites at NDSU are exceptional, offering opportunities you won’t find anywhere else,” Norgren said.

Last year, Norgren had the chance to work with athletes on NDSU’s Football team during their season. Norgren traveled with the team to every game, including the FCS National Championship game in Frisco, Texas.

“It was an unforgettable experience and gave me invaluable real-world exposure,” she said.

Faculty in the department care deeply about student success by offering one-on-one office hours, having extra practice opportunities in labs and providing career advice. Norgren has felt supported by her professors, which makes the program feel like a community.

“The faculty in the department have been incredible to work with. They’re not only knowledgeable and supportive academically, but they’re also genuinely invested in how we’re doing as people outside the program,” she said. “They make an effort to build real relationships, which creates an environment where you feel comfortable asking questions, seeking guidance, and learning from mistakes.”

After she graduates, Norgren is hoping to work as a certified athletic trainer in a setting closely involved with sports, whether that’s working with a collegiate team, a high school program or in a clinical setting.

Norgren encourages those interested in athletic training to apply to NDSU’s Master of Athletic Training program.

“The athletic training program at NDSU truly sets you up for success. The combination of supportive faculty, hands-on learning, and high-level clinical opportunities creates an environment where you can grow both personally and professionally,” she said. “If you’re looking for a place where you’ll be challenged, supported and given opportunities you won’t find anywhere else, NDSU is the right choice.”
