Applicants Who Are Minors

The following procedures and conditions apply to all individuals who are under the age of 18 on the first day of classes and are intended to ensure that minors admitted to the University are academically prepared, safe, and appropriately supported in an adult learning environment. Participation in certain NDSU student services, activities or programs may be impacted due to age requirements.

Degree-seeking applicants who have (or will) graduate(d) from high school (or equivalent), and who will be under the age of 17 on the first day of classes must meet the following admission guidelines and procedures.

Admission Eligibility

  • All degree-seeking applicants who have (or will) graduate(d) from high school (or equivalent), and who will be under the age of 17 on the first day of classes must submit the Application for Admission and have a parent or legal guardian complete the Petition for Exception to Age Requirements form.
  • Admission of minors will be evaluated based upon academic preparedness and demonstrated capacity to succeed in college-level coursework.

Restrictions and Limitations

Students under the age of 18:
  • are permitted to utilize the Wellness Center; however, a minor waiver signed by a parent/guardian is required before the first visit to the Wellness Center
  • are required to have written parent/guardian consent to receive treatment through Student Health Service
  • may not be permitted to participate in fraternity or sorority life recruitment and activities, club sports, and travel related to student organization involvement
Students under the age of 17:
  • must petition for an exception to the minimum age requirement for degree-seeking admission
  • may have additional academic program-specific limitations
Students under the age of 16:
  • are not permitted to participate in Study Abroad
  • are not eligible to live in on-campus housing
Students under the age of 13:
  • will not be admitted to an in-person program at NDSU
  • may have additional restrictions due to the Child Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). COPPA imposes certain requirements on operators of websites or online services directed to children under 13 years of age, and on operators of other websites or online services that have actual knowledge that they are collecting personal information online from a child under 13 years of age. This can affect FAFSA filing and obtaining a university email account

All enrolled students, regardless of age, must abide by University policies, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) rights and responsibilities.
