NDSU Academic Scholarships

The Department of Biological Sciences offers many merit-based scholarships.  These scholarships are separate from those offered through NDSU financial aid and are not need-based.  Students are eligible for these scholarships if they have declared a major within the Department of Biological Sciences.  Apply through NDSU’s scholarship portal and search for specific scholarship opportunities. 

 

Undergraduate Scholarships

Bleier International Studies Scholarship

This scholarship is given to a junior or senior with a declared major in the Department of Biological Sciences.  The student must be signed up for or enrolled in an international education experience.  Preference is given for international experiences in which English is not the primary language. 

J. Frank Cassel Scholarship

A research award available to junior or senior undergraduate students with declared major in the Department of Biological Sciences. This award provides the recipient with funds for research expenses and a personal stipend. 

Gary K. Clambey Scholarship

A scholarship to recognize Dr. Gary K. Clambey’s commitment to students.  This scholarship is for an outstanding junior or senior in the Department of Biological Sciences.

G. Arthur Larson Scholarship

An award provided from an endowment established by Mrs. G.A. Larson in memory of her husband, Dr. G. Arthur Larson, a prominent Fargo ophthalmologist, to a student pursing a pre-medicine program of study at NDSU.  Selection was based on superior academic performance and financial need.

NDSU HERD S-STEM Scholarship

Students must be enrolled at NDSU as an incoming freshman or a currently enrolled freshman or sophomore at the time of disbursement and be pursuing a degree in Biological Science. Students must be citizens of the United States, nationals of the United States (as defined in section 101(a) of the Immigration and Nationality Act), aliens admitted as refugees under section 207 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, or aliens lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence. Students must demonstrate financial need as established by the office of Financial Aid and Scholarships and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Ries and Startz Family Scholarship

A Scholarship established by the John B. Ries and Frank Startz families.  This scholarship provides financial assistance to undergraduate students in biological sciences. 

Dr. Velva E. Rudd Scholarship

A scholarship in memory of Dr. Velva E. Rudd for a junior or senior majoring in biological sciences.

O.A. Stevens Memorial Scholarship

The outstanding senior biology major is presented with this cash award.  Selection is from biology majors on the basis of academic achievement and character as exemplified by Dr. O.A. Stevens, a true naturalist, NDSU service: 1909-1977. 

Warren C. Whitman Outstanding Botany Student Award

A case award is presented annually to an outstanding senior in biological sciences.  Selection is on the basis of academic achievement and performance.

 

Graduate Scholarships

Shelia Kath Scholarship Fund

This scholarship is given to graduate student enrolled in a major within the Department of Biological Sciences.

Oliver L. Lavoy Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is given to a graduate student pursuing a master’s degree in natural resources. 

Linz Family Endowed Ornithology Scholarship Fund

A scholarship given to a graduate student whose major adviser is in either the Environmental and Conservation Sciences program or Biological Sciences and whose research project revolves around ornithology.

Harvey K. Nelson Scholarship

A scholarship established to honor Harvey K. Nelson’s contributions to waterfowl and wetland research.  This scholarship is for graduate students in biological sciences and provides financial assistance and research funds.

Suzy Schmoll Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a graduate student majoring in biological sciences.  Preference is given for permanent residents (new Americans) or international students.
