Mental Health First Aid

Why Mental Health First Aid?

MHFA teaches you how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders. This training gives you the skills that you need to reach out and provide initial support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care.

What MHFA Covers

  • Common signs and symptoms of mental illness
  • Common signs and symptoms of substance abuse
  • How to interact with a person in crisis
  • How to connect someone with help
  • Newly added: Expanded content on trauma, addiction, and self-care

Thanks to funding provided by the NDSU Student Government and the NDUS System Office, we are pleased to announce that registration is now open for Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training. Registration is free to members of the NDSU community (i.e., faculty, staff and students) and includes all modules and materials necessary to obtain MHFA certification once completed.

The blended learning option consists of participants completing a 2-hour self-paced online course, followed by a 5.5 hour in-person skills application instructor-led session. The self-paced online course must be completed prior to attending the in-person skills application session. Both sessions must be completed to obtain MHFA certification.

Watch for upcoming in-person skills training sessions.
