Forest Health Technician

Position Description:
We are seeking a forestry technician for the 2026 field season. Responsibilities include addressing public and private tree health assistance requests statewide; assisting with insect trapping for emerald ash borer; applying forest health sampling methods; conducting tree health surveys in communities statewide; and collecting and managing data to assist long-term forest health monitoring.

Work Schedule: 40 hours per week, April 1, 2026 through September 1, 2026 (start and end date are negotiable). Work hours are generally 40 hours per week, 8 hours per day. Frequent statewide travel will be required.

Advertised Pay: $22 per hour.

State Forests Intern

Seasonal, non-benefited

We are seeking a Forestry Intern for the 2026 field season. The North Dakota Forest Service manages five state forests encompassing 13,945 acres, 4 campgrounds, 42 miles of maintained trails, fishing access to for lakes and canoe access to three major rivers to enhance the public use of these lands. The Forestry Intern will assist and learn about all aspects of natural resource and recreational management of these lands.

Work Schedule: Spring/Summer season 2026. Start and End Date negotiable, up to 6 months. Work hours are generally 40 hours per week, 8 hours per day. Occasional work on weekends may be required.

Advertised Pay: $16.50 per hour. Basic housing will be provided if needed. Enrolled students may negotiate receiving credits with a major professor in the case of an internship.

Wildland Firefighter

Seasonal, non-benefited

Firefighters must be able to engage in fire suppression and wildland fire related activities, including fire prevention, patrol, and prescribed burning. When not engaged in fire suppression duties, crew members will complete hazardous fuels mitigation projects. During fuels project work, crew member’s duties include chopping brush, felling small trees, and assisting sawyers using various hand tools, such as axes and shovels along with power tools including chainsaws. Crew members will clean, recondition, and store tools and equipment, and be responsible for facility maintenance and cleaning. Upon hiring, this position will require completion of Basic Wildland Firefighter Training (S130/190) as defined by NWCG. Work sites may be away from the home base and may require travel for extended periods.

This is an hourly position with paid overtime. This includes paid travel and lodging while working away from Bismarck and paid physical training time (on-site gym) when working in Bismarck. Crewmembers will have opportunities to advance NWCG qualifications and attend NWCG sponsored trainings.

Senior Firefighter

Senior Firefighters must be able to lead less experienced crew members while engaging in fire suppression and wildland fire related activities, including fire prevention, patrol and prescribed burning. Senior firefighters will be assigned to a Type 3 or Type 6 Wildland Engine and will assist the Engine Captain with crew supervision. When not engaged in fire suppression duties, a Senior Firefighter will complete hazardous fuels mitigation projects. During fuels project work, Senior Firefighters will assist with crew supervision, operate chainsaws to chop brush and fell small trees. Senior Firefighter will clean, recondition, and store tools and equipment, and be responsible for facility maintenance and cleaning.

This is an hourly position with paid overtime. Paid travel and lodging while working away from Bismarck. Paid physical training time (on-site gym) when working in Bismarck. Crewmembers will have opportunities to advance NWCG qualifications and attend NWCG sponsored trainings.

Engine Captain

The Engine Captains will engage in wildfire suppression and wildland fire related activities including prevention, patrol, training, and prescribed burning. The Engine Captains will assist the Wildland Crew Lead and Wildland Fuels Technician in supervision of their specific engine module. The Engine Captains will be assigned to a Type 3 or Type 6 Wildland Engine and will provide leadership and supervision of that module. When not engaged in fire readiness and suppression duties, crewmembers will complete hazardous fuels mitigation projects.

This is an hourly position with paid overtime. Paid travel and lodging while working away from Bismarck. Paid physical training time (on-site gym) when working in Bismarck. Crewmembers will have opportunities to advance NWCG qualifications and attend NWCG sponsored trainings.
