State Forest Horse Policies
Camping
- Camping fees for all NDFS camping areas is $20 per night.
- An additional $6 per night per horse is required for equestrian camping.
- A free bundle of firewood is provided to each registered campsite when patrol is on duty.
- When patrol is not on duty, campers should use the self-registration station at campground entrance. Registration stub can be attached to campsite post or vehicle windshield.
Trails
- Ride only on trails designated for horse use. Trail maps are located at the trail heads.
- Most trails on the Turtle Mountain State Forest are considered multiple use trails and are open to horseback riding unless otherwise posted.
- Trails may be closed during unusually wet periods or unsafe conditions.
- Please respect the rights of adjacent landowners and keep your horses on the designated trail right of way.
- Leave all gates as you found them.
Corral Use
- Tie horses to corrals or horse trailers, not to trees. The use of hobbles is prohibited.
- Corrals are designed for two horses each, and one corral per campsite.
- Please clean up hay and manure before you leave, both in corrals and all use areas.
- Manure and hay must be placed in wood bunks next to corrals or taken with you when you leave.
- The use of temporary fences in the campground is prohibited.
Horses
Those transporting horses into North Dakota from other states must have a current health certificate issued by their veterinarian within the last 30 days. The certificate must have an accurate description of their horse, including breed, sex, age, color, markings and registration number, if known. The horse should have certification of negative Coggins test for equine infectious anemia done within the last 12 months.
Weed Free Hay
Certified weed free hay is preferred, but not required at this time.
