Why Become a Mentor?

Mentoring is leadership work. You'll develop the following skills and prepare yourself for your future career all while helping NDSU students thrive.

  • Communication: asking better questions, difficult conversations, clarity
  • Coaching: goal-setting, planning, habit building, feedback
  • Professionalism: documentation, reliability, boundaries, time management
  • Problem-solving: triage, referrals, decision-making under constraints
  • Leadership: influence without authority, teamwork, facilitation

Would I be a good mentor?

Are you curious about people and learning? Can you be relied on to follow-through? Are you comfortable asking questions? Are you interested in a career in leadership, education, helping professions, HR, student affairs, healthcare, or counseling?

Then you would make a great mentor. All of our mentors undergo extensive training so they feel comfortable providing support, while also growing as leaders, communicators, and individuals.
