Sheep Research and Teaching Center

The main sheep facility is located near the junction of Interstate 29 and 19th Avenue North in Fargo. The original barn was constructed in the late 1940s. The facility has expanded to include a second barn for lambing and animal housing, plus a breeding barn for rams. Sheep have access to outdoor dry lots year-round, and some are raised on pasture in the summer. Serving as the primary teaching facility for sheep production, the unit offers classes and research opportunities for undergraduate students. NDSU also has a research facility for sheep at the Hettinger Research Extension Center.

The Herd

The NDSU sheep flock in Fargo includes purebred Hampshire and Columbia ewes dating back to 1915 and 1945, respectively. We also raise commercial whiteface ewes and a small flock of commercial hair sheep. Yearling ewes are exhibited by undergraduate students during the NDSU Little International competition hosted by the Saddle & Sirloin Club.
