NDSU story submission guidelines
Marketing and Communications is proud to provide a platform where the vibrant and inspiring stories of our NDSU community can be shared and celebrated. The following criteria serve as guidelines when considering news articles and feature stories for submission. All submissions are reviewed for inclusion, content and style. Exceptions may be made in certain situations.
Alternative news sources on campus include The Spectrum, KNDS Radio, Bison Information Network and college/department news pages.
Stories likely to be published include, but are not limited to:
- National faculty awards and recognition
- Major research grants
- Student academic achievements
- Major campus events/traditions (Homecoming, Welcome Week, Commencement, building dedications, Celebration of Excellence, etc.)
- New academic programs/co-curricular opportunities
- Institutional initiatives/investments
- Unique student experiences
- Industry partnerships
- Inspiring alumni
- Student life and resources
- Bison spotlights
Stories not likely to be published include, but are not limited to:
- Internal announcements, such as training seminars and awards
- Non-NDSU-sponsored community events, even if the event is held on campus
- Student organization news or announcements
- Classified advertisements or classified-type announcements
- Marketplace related sales and promotions
- For purpose of variety: content that was recently covered by Marketing and Communications (may be considered at a later date)
Photographs
Whenever possible, we prefer to include a photo with news articles. Images may be submitted and will be considered for use. Please note that AI images will not be accepted. Photos of our students, faculty and staff in action are ideal. Horizontal photos are preferred over vertical photos. Headshot photos also are accepted and important for some stories. Faculty and staff headshots are taken monthly at Prairie Hall.
Things to know before you submit a story
Before submitting a story idea, consider who you want to reach and what you want your audience to take away from the content. The most effective stories have a clear audience, a defined goal and a message that supports NDSU's brand.
This form will help shape your idea by identifying the intended audience, desired outcome and brand alignment before outlining the story itself. The information you provide helps the Marketing and Communications team evaluate opportunities, develop strategic content and create stories that resonate with your target audience.
Please submit story ideas at least four weeks before your desired publication date to allow time for planning, writing and review. Requests that include photography or video should be submitted at least six weeks in advance.
If you’re submitting a ready-to-publish story, we can typically turn it around quickly with copy editing and review.
