Kumar Krishnakumar, assistant professor of management, recently had a co-written paper accepted for publication in the Journal of Management, Spirituality and Religion.

The paper, “The ‘Good’ and the ‘Bad’ of Spiritual Leadership,” proposes a framework for understanding the process by which spiritual leadership works in different personal and organizational settings. It was co-written with Jeffery D. Houghton and Christopher N. Ellison of West Virginia University and Christopher P. Neck of Arizona State University.

The authors propose that spiritual leadership is effective, contingent on four other factors. Spiritual leadership can be positive and effective when the leaders exhibit low levels of narcissism, higher levels of prosocial motivation, higher leader integrity and higher levels of organizational support.

If these conditions are not met, spiritual leaders may not be able to lead organizations to positive outcomes, as they could be focusing on their own self interests than the organizations’ and the followers’ long-term well-being.

Krishnakumar joined NDSU in 2007. His areas of teaching expertise include organizational behavior and leadership in organizations. Krishnakumar earned a bachelor’s degree from Kerala Agricultural University in India, a master’s degree from Louisiana State University and a Master of Business Administration and doctorate from Virginia Tech.

The Journal of Management, Spirituality and Religion published its first issue in 2004 and disseminates work for the development of theory, best practice and the exchange of ideas and debate in the field of management, spirituality and religion.

NDSU is recognized as one of the nation's top 108 public and private universities by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education.
