Julie Smith, an NDSU doctoral student in counselor education and supervision, presented a workshop at the Healing Our Spirit Worldwide 7th Gathering in New Zealand in November.

"NDSU, along with the excellent instructors, have enabled me to weave my Anishinaabe culture and my personal experience of growing up and working on the White Earth Indian Reservation into my education and learning,” said Smith. “Presenting at an incredible international conference was made possible by the support and encouragement of NDSU."

Smith, who comes from the White Earth Nation, presented a workshop on the importance of including culture in evidence-based therapy models.

Her trip was funded by a $20,000 minority fellowship from the National Board of Certified Counselors Foundation.

Smith also is working toward an American Indian Public Health certificate through the Master of Public Health program at NDSU.
