SHARE

The NDSU Department of Mathematics will host the Sonia Kovalevsky Mathematics High School Day. The event is a program of mathematics activities, games and career information for young women in grades 9-12. The event is planned for Saturday, Oct. 10, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the NDSU Alumni Center Reimers room.

Sonia Kovalevsky was a Russian mathematician during the late 19th century. The first doctoral degree earned by a woman in mathematics was awarded to her summa cum laude. After several years of trying to receive a position at a university in Europe, she entered her research into an anonymous contest and was the unanimous winner. In 1889, she was appointed full professor of mathematics at Stockholm.

All participants will receive books and prizes. For groups traveling more than 100 miles, round trip mileage reimbursement will be provided, as well as hotel accommodations on Friday. Breakfast and lunch also will be provided.

The program is supported by a grant from the Association for Women in Mathematics, Elizabeth City State University and the National Security Agency. Further funding has been provided by the NDSU Office of the Provost, the Center for Science and Mathematics Education and the Department of Mathematics.
