Career expos give NDSU students a head start on the job search

NDSU students and graduates are sought after on the job market. One of the ways the university helps students and employers connect is through career expos.

Two major employment events are coming up at the Fargodome – the Agriculture and Business Career Expo and the Engineering and Tech Expo.

More than 340 regional and national employers have registered for the two expos, and an estimated 2,000 to 2,500 students are expected to attend. Many of them will make initial contacts about jobs or internships.

Junior Katie Skalicky, a crop and weed science major from Owatonna, Minnesota, gets goosebumps when she attends a career expo. “It’s really cool to see the floor of the Fargodome filled with employers and their booths,” she said. “I always feel proud, because every booth represents a company that wants NDSU students working for them. That reassures me that I made the right choice in attending NDSU.”

Senior Sheridan Burns has experienced how effective face-to-face meetings can be. “I went as a freshman with little hope of getting any offers or even a serious conversation,” said the construction management major from Fargo. “But, I left that day with two interviews that turned into two internship offers.”

At the expos, students are introduced to many different industries, and to careers that may not have been on their radar. All majors are encouraged to attend because there is something for everyone.

“Meeting 50, 60 or 100 employers under one roof over the course of two-to-three hours – that’s the best way to maximize time and effort in job hunting,” said Smita Garg, NDSU Career Centerassistant director of employer engagement. “The expos open students’ eyes and minds to a variety of career choices.”

The Agriculture and Business Career Expo is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 25, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Engineering and Tech Expo is set for Wednesday, Sept. 26, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
