North Dakota State University women's athletic director Lynn Dorn announced today that Erich Hinterstocker has resigned as head women's volleyball coach.
Kari Thompson, assistant coach since 2006, will assume responsibilities as head coach for the remainder of the season.
"I have a deep respect and high level of confidence in Kari's ability to continue in this leadership role as she moves the team forward," Dorn said.
Hinterstocker cited personal reasons for his resignation.
"It has been a tremendous opportunity for me to serve as the head volleyball coach at North Dakota State University. At this point in my career, however, it is important for me to recognize how the demands of the coaching profession have impacted my life and those that I care about," he wrote in a letter dated Oct. 19.
"I greatly appreciate the time, efforts, and dedication all the coaches, players, support staff, alumni, and community members have given during the past five seasons, and I wish everyone in the volleyball program and Bison athletics continued success," he wrote.
Hinterstocker had a 95-38 record in his fifth season at NDSU. He led the Bison to three straight 20-win seasons, Summit League championships in 2008 and 2009, and the school's first NCAA Division I tournament in 2008.
North Dakota State, 11-9 overall and third in The Summit League with an 8-3 record, is scheduled to host ninth-place Western Illinois at 7 p.m. Friday and sixth-place IUPUI at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse.
