The city of Fargo has initiated the spring 2011 flood-fighting efforts by announcing the opening Sandbag Central.
Volunteers are requested to assist with preparing sandbags beginning Monday, Feb. 14. Sandbagging operations will continue Monday through Saturday, between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. until the current goal of approximately 3 million sandbags is met.
NDSU students, faculty and staff who would like to volunteer for these efforts may check in at the NDSU flood support center on the main floor of the Memorial Union near the Bison Connection. Transportation to and from Sandbag Central will be provided every 15 minutes. Please note: NDSU has made no operational changes at this time, and volunteer efforts are encouraged when students are not in class.
At check-in, volunteers will be required to complete a 2011 Flood Response Volunteer Intake Form. The intake form will request basic information such as name, address, phone, emergency contact and anticipated length of shift. The form also contains an acknowledgment and assumption of risk waiver and release of liability statement that volunteers must read and agree to. This form must be completed for each volunteer shift.
In the interest of personal safety, please dress in layers, wear waterproof shoes or boots, and bring gloves to protect your hands. You may also want to watch a video on sandbag safety at http://www.ag.ndsu.edu/flood/sandbagging-safety-tips.
Please note that on Monday, Feb. 14, NDSU President Dean Bresciani will be meeting with media to discuss NDSU’s contributions to the flood fight. The news conference is scheduled for 1 p.m. near the Memorial Union coffee shop.
