A series of events is scheduled in October to honor the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning community, commonly known as LGBTQ, at NDSU.
Movie producer Dan Guerrero is scheduled to present his critically acclaimed solo show bridging his identities as Latino and gay with music, laughter and poignancy. The show is driven by Guerrero’s lifelong friendship with the late Chicano artist Carlos Almaraz and Guerrero’s father, Chicano music legend Lalo Guerrero. “¡GAYTINO!” is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. in NDSU Festival Concert Hall. Donations of non-perishable food items will be collected for the NDSU Equity and Diversity Center.
DeRionne Pollard, president of Montgomery College, Maryland, is scheduled to present “Liberated from Fear: Living and Thriving While Being ‘Out’ on a College Campus” Thursday, Oct. 25, at 9 a.m. in the Memorial Union Century Theater. Pollard will speak about her experiences being out as a student and college president as part of the President’s Diversity Series.
Other events include panel members sharing their experiences and reflections about being out on campus. The session is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 3, at noon in the Memorial Union Arikara room.
NDSU Homecoming 2012 will feature a reception for all LGBTQ alumni and their families and partners, current LGBTQ campus community members who are 21 and older, and supportive Allies. The event is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 5, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Stoker room in the Hotel Donaldson in downtown Fargo.
The Equity and Diversity Center is scheduled to host an open house on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 11 a.m. The campus community and alumni are invited to stop by immediately after the Homecoming parade for refreshments. The event will feature the grand opening of the LGBTQ Resource Center.
Donna Ross, transgender advocate and educator, is scheduled to present at two events on Wednesday, Oct. 17. At noon, she will present “Facing the Foibles of Gender: Encounters with the Silly Creatures” in the Memorial Union Arikara room, where she will share some of her humorous experiences with gender influences in society. Ross also will present “Stories of My Second Lives: An Intersection of Journeys” at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Union Prairie Rose room. She will share some of her writings during her emotional and physical transition from man to woman and how that led her on a journey from being agnostic to seeking ministry with the United Church of Christ.
An “Our Pride Runs Campuswide” reception is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 18, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Equity and Diversity Center. Spirit Day is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 19. Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation urges people to take a stand against bullying by wearing purple.
A costume-encouraged ball is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 27, from 9:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. in the Memorial Union Ballroom. The event is sponsored by the GayStraight+ Alliance and Campus Live.
A “We’re in this Together” panel is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 31, at noon in the Memorial Union Arikara room. Panelists will reflect on their experiences and share a loved one’s journey to come out.
