Candy Skauge, senior art major and NDSU staff member, has been selected as the January Honorary Student of the Month by Uptown Gallery. Her painting, titled “Beauty,” is now on exhibit in the gallery, located at the corner of First Avenue North and Broadway in downtown Fargo.

"I’m both excited and honored to have been chosen for January," Skauge said, who is an archive technician at the NDSU Archives. "Having one of my paintings on display, and the possibility it could sell, is very exciting. It makes me feel that I’m more than just an art student taking classes; I have the potential to become a 'real' artist."

Skauge said she is grateful to the university for allowing staff to take classes and for the staff tuition waiver program, noting she is seeking her first bachelor's degree at age 63.

"I tell people age is just a number, and it is. I love being around the students, they make me feel young," she said. "And who doesn’t like to feel young?"

The Uptown Gallery, founded in 2013, features exceptional established and emerging artists from the community and the Upper Midwest. The gallery showcases art across a variety of media.
