Sport management students learn from leading industry professionals

Students in NDSU’s sport management program are hearing from some of the top names in the industry.

Recently, the Introduction to Sport Management course met via Zoom with Nic Barlage, president of business operations for the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association.

Barlage gave a presentation on Nov. 6, and took a variety of questions from the students. A total of 45 students in the program participated in the Zoom event.

In addition, the program is arranging a Zoom presentation by Jim Rooney, co-owner of the National Football League’s Pittsburgh Steelers. His talk is tentatively planned for spring semester.

“We feel bringing in sport professionals, from all parts of the sport industry, is vital to our student’s success,” said Tyler Tracy, sport management program coordinator and lecturer. “Once a student understands what it takes to be successful within the sport industry, they can then start their plan to success. Within our program, we believe networking and experience are key. Having sport professional guest speakers present is a great way to communicate that message.”

NDSU’s sport management program prepares students for employment in local, state, regional, national or international level sporting and recreation organizations.

As a student-focused, land-grant, research university, we serve our citizens.
