NDSU track and field athlete Shelby Gunnells was named to the Academic All-District 6 team for Division I women’s track and field and cross country, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced July 15.

It is the third consecutive Academic All-District selection for Gunnells, who was named a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2020 after earning second-team recognition in 2019. As an All-District honoree, Gunnells will again advance to the national ballot for Academic All-America honors, to be announced in mid-August.

Gunnells earned her bachelor’s degree in geology with a 4.0 GPA. She won the NCAA Elite 90 Award for outdoor track and field in 2021. She ranked eighth on the NCAA performance list for the outdoor shot put this season and earned second-team All-America honors in the event.

In all, Gunnells was a three-time All-American in the shot put and an 18-time Summit League place-winner in the throwing events during her Bison career.

District 6 is comprised of student-athletes from Arkansas, Iowa, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
