2026 Spring Semester Attending Veterinarian Lecture and Training Series
These trainings focus on animal welfare and veterinary care. Lectures are conducted on Teams, and recordings will be made available (except where indicated). Trainings are focused on IACUC proposal submissions and veterinary procedures. Register for each session separately. Labs may have limited space.

IACUC and AV roles in research
Feb. 25, 11 am - noon
This lecture covers the roles of the IACUC and the attending veterinarian (AV) in research, including what the AV can and cannot do outside of IACUC approval.
Adverse events
Mar. 11, 11 am - noon
The discussion concerns determining what constitutes an adverse event. This lecture also describes the procedure for when an unintended incident occurs on or off an IACUC-approved protocol.
Navigating Novelution
Mar. 25, 11 am - noon
Training session on submitting an IACUC proposal through Novelution. Other topics covered include the steps required for a submission, how to determine which category to choose, when an AV consult is required, common pitfalls to avoid, and what happens after a protocol is submitted.
Animal care and vet records
Apr. 15, 11 am - noon
This lecture outlines the animal care and veterinary treatment records and documentation required for and off an IACUC-approved protocol.
Suture lab (limited to ten participants)
Apr. 29, 10 am - noon
The suture lab will use models and hides to practice simple suture patterns. Intended for those working on skin, muscle, and liver biopsies. Limited to 10 participants. Registration confirmation upon AV approval. There will not be a recording available for this session.
Humane endpoints/euthanasia
Apr. 13, 11 am - noon
Discussion of humane endpoints on study and AVMA-approved methods of euthanasia for both small and large animals.
Captive bolt lab (limited to animal care faculty, staff, and students)
May 27, 10 am - noon
This lab will use carcasses to learn effective and safe captive bolt euthanasia techniques. Intended for faculty, staff, and students working with livestock. Registration confirmation upon AV approval. There will not be a recording available for this session.
