These trainings focus on animal welfare and veterinary care and are focused on IACUC proposal submissions and veterinary procedures. Lectures are conducted on Teams, and replays for most sessions are available.

2026 SPRING SEMESTER SERIES

This lecture covered the roles of the IACUC and the attending veterinarian (AV) in research, including what the AV can and cannot do outside of IACUC approval.

The discussion concerned determining what constitutes an adverse event. This lecture also described the procedure for when an unintended incident occurs on or off an IACUC-approved protocol.

Training session on submitting an IACUC proposal through Novelution. Other topics covered included the steps required for a submission, how to determine which category to choose, when an AV consult is required, common pitfalls to avoid, and what happens after a protocol is submitted.

This lecture outlined the animal care and veterinary treatment records and documentation required for and off an IACUC-approved protocol.

The suture lab used models and hides to practice simple suture patterns. Intended for those working on skin, muscle, and liver biopsies.

Discussion of humane endpoints on study and AVMA-approved methods of euthanasia for both small and large animals.

This lab used carcasses to learn effective and safe captive bolt euthanasia techniques. Intended for faculty, staff, and students working with livestock.
