Certification Requirements

EMG Interns are required to donate a minimum of 48 hours of volunteer service by the end of the second growing season with the program. Some interns are able to fulfill this requirement within the first year to achieve certification. For those interns who need two growing seasons, please report your partial hours at the end of the first year. Master Gardener Interns are not required to complete continuing education during their internship period but are welcome to report continuing education events they choose to attend.

Certified Extension Master Gardeners are required by national program policy to be recertified by completing 20 hours of volunteer service and 10 hours of continuing education annually.

Those who have completed EMG Diagnostic Training, Diagnostic Apprentices, are required to complete a 20-hour apprenticeship within the first two growing seasons focusing on diagnostic volunteer service. This apprenticeship may take the place of annual volunteer reporting and does not impose additional volunteer hours beyond the annual 20-hour requirement.

Following the Diagnostic Apprenticeship, Certified EMG Diagnosticians are encouraged to complete a minimum of 8 hours of diagnostic service annually as part of their 20 hours of annual volunteer service.
