One-day event to teach middle schoolers about genetics

Middle schoolers in sixth through eighth grade are invited to attend “Jedi Genetics: Exploring genetics through a Star Wars lens,” from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 13 in NDSU’s Aldevron Tower, room 350.

Participants will discover secrets of health at the molecular level and learn about the uses of DNA and biomarkers to diagnose conditions. Hands-on activities include ELISA, a lab testing technique that detects and counts certain antibodies, antigens, proteins and hormones. Participants will also learn about gel electrophoresis to separate mixtures of DNA, RNA or proteins according to molecular size.
