Ramona Oswald, professor and head of human development and family studies at University of Illinois, is set to give the 11th annual Gertrude Weigum Hinsz Lecture at NDSU.
She is scheduled to present “Place Matters: LGBTQ Families in Community Context” on Monday, Nov. 8 at 3:30 p.m. at the NDSU Harry D. McGovern Alumni Center Diedrich Atrium.
Oswald will discuss how LGBTQ parents and their children live in every type of community, and that differences in location are linked to race, class, gender and place-based attachments and identities. Community climate variations impact the health, well-being and political engagement of LGBTQ parents and their children.
Oswald will describe what is known about communities’ social climate within local legal, political, religious, educational and employment contexts. She also will summarize research on how social climate impacts the quality of life for LGBTQ parents and their children.
Oswald earned her bachelor's degree from Macalester College, St. Paul, Minnesota, and her master's degree and doctorate in family social science at the University of Minnesota. Oswald joined the University of Illinois faculty in 1998.
Her research interests include LGBT families, community social climate and access to resources. Her Rainbow Illinois project has collected survey, interview and observational information about Illinois LGBT experiences since 2000.
