Financial Aid

Students currently receiving financial aid or scholarships who are enrolled in a study abroad program may typically use that financial aid toward paying program costs. Your study abroad program cost may adjust your total cost of attendance for the semester. A Study Abroad Coordinator can help you create a budget for your program. Please visit with a Financial Aid Advisor to determine your exact eligibility and bring your budget breakdown. You can schedule a meeting with Financial Aid through Campus Connection > NDSU eForms > Financial Aid > Study Abroad Appointment.

Study Abroad Scholarships

Several scholarships are offered directly through Study Abroad. Students should complete a General Study Abroad Scholarship Application online by the following deadlines.

• October 1: Winter Break, Spring Break, Spring and Summer Programs.
• March 1: Summer, Fall, and Academic Year Programs

There is only one General Study Abroad Scholarship Application. Students will be considered for all of the following scholarships depending on guidelines and eligibility.

NDSU Study Abroad Scholarships
Multiple scholarships are awarded each fall and spring to students who will be studying abroad. Preference is given to students with financial need. Applicants must have a 2.75 GPA or higher.

NDSU Miles Scholarship
Global Programs and Services is excited to award free airline tickets to NDSU students who will be studying abroad! Preference is given to students who receive the Pell Grant, to students with financial need, and to students participating in semester/yearlong programs. Students must also be qualified to study abroad and plan to use the scholarship in order to study abroad on any length of program.

NDSU John and Susan Wold Scholarship
Scholarship in the amount of $1500 or $1000 that is awarded annually for the period of a summer, semester, or year of study abroad. Students attending faculty-led programs are encouraged to apply. Preference is given to students who are North Dakota or Minnesota residents. Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA or higher.

Justin Miedema Study Abroad Initiative Scholarship
Scholarship awards one $1,000 scholarship annually to undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need. Applicants must have a 2.5 GPA or higher.

NDSU Laurel Sparks Study Abroad Scholarship
A $1000 scholarship to be awarded to an NDSU student majoring in Spanish or French who will be studying abroad for minimum of one semester during the academic year. Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and must have completed SPAN/FREN 312 before going abroad. Preference is given to Juniors studying abroad for the first time.

Provider Scholarships
Additional scholarships may be available for students who participate in Provider Programs with API and USAC. Please complete the General Study Abroad Scholarship Application. to be eligible for these awards.

NDSU Faculty-Led Programs
Once participants are accepted into the program, they will have 7 days to commit using the online application system. Once committed to the program, students will be responsible for 50% of the program cost up to the 30th day after acceptance, and 100% of the cost after the 30th day. This is the withdrawal policy, not when program costs are due.

NSE and ISEP Exchange Programs
Once participants are placed at a host institution by NSE or ISEP, students will have the opportunity to commit to their placement. Once committed to the program, students will be responsible for a $500 withdrawal penalty plus any non-recoverable costs of withdrawing through NSE and ISEP. Students are bound by the withdrawal policies of the provider in addition to NDSU.

Partner University Exchange, Direct, and Provider Programs
Once participants are accepted into the program, they will have 7 days to commit using the online application system. Once committed to the program, students will be responsible for a $500 withdrawal penalty plus any non-recoverable costs of withdrawing from the provider. Students are bound by the withdrawal policies of the provider in addition to NDSU.

Domestic Field Trips
Once participants have submitted the application, they will have 7 days to initiate a withdrawal before the program cost becomes non-refundable. If the program is cancelled by NDSU, a refund will be provided minus any non-recoverable costs.

For All Programs
Participants must contact ndsu.studyabroad@ndsu.edu by email to initiate their intent to cancel their participation in the program. Please note that the amounts above are not related to NDSU tuition and fees; the costs above are for expenses incurred for applying to participate on a study abroad program.

Study Abroad and Credits at NDSU

All NDSU students studying abroad will be registered for NDSU general study abroad credits, regardless of program. All students are required to pay student fees in order to retain full-time status, use their NDSU email account, register for classes, and retain financial aid. As part of the preparations for going abroad, you will register for the proper amount of credits in one of the following courses.

• Faculty-led Programs: GLBL 379 or a department-specific course number
• Partner and Provider Programs: Students will be enrolled in a placeholder course to keep you enrolled full-time at NDSU. This course will be replaced by the actual courses that are transferred back to NDSU after the completion of the program. Please note that this process can take 2-3 months after the program ends.
• Experiential Learning Programs: NDSU offers opportunities other than the traditional study abroad experience. Some majors have experiential requirements such as internships, volunteering, student teaching, research, and field studies. Students can fulfill these requirements while abroad in career fields unique to their locations. Earn NDSU credits, fulfill degree requirements, and gain hands-on experiences in your desired career field while participating in one of these other global experiences.

Minimum Credits While Abroad

In general, students studying abroad for a semester or longer are required to take the equivalent of at least 12 credits during their semester abroad to avoid any possible issues with future financial aid.

Ordering your Transcript

Before you leave your host school, make sure your host university sends your transcripts directly to the Office of International Student and Study Abroad Services. It must be sent to our office directly by either email or mail.

EMAIL: Request to have your host school or provider send an official electronic copy to ndsu.studyabroad@ndsu.edu.

MAIL: If you are sending by mail, please be sure to use the correct address below for the type of carrier used to send it or it will not arrive. Our theory is that they disappear into a black hole because none ever surface at a later date.

If there are classes that you did not have approved for equivalency before you left or while abroad, you can still get them approved

Transfer Credit Timeline

1. Host University/Program Provider: 1 -2 months

• Emails transcript to NDSU Study Abroad Service (ndsu.studyabroad@ndsu.edu)
• Substitute/Waive a Course Forms can still be submitted

2. Study Abroad: 1 week

• Uploads the transcript from abroad to your online study abroad portal and emails a notification to student
• Sends transcript to Registration and Records

3. Registration and Records: 1-2 months

• Updates NDSU transcript to show P and 0 credits for term abroad
• Posts number of credits from abroad to Transfer Credit section of NDSU transcript
• Processes approved course substitutions

Requesting Course Equivalency Afterward Studying Abroad

By default, courses listed on your transcript from abroad will return to NDSU as general credits. If you did not submit a substitution form before your transcript from abroad was received and processed, you can still request that the courses replace courses at NDSU later. The process depends on what you want to use your classes abroad to replace.

• Courses for your major or minor: Submit the Substitute/Waive a Course Form directly to Registration and Records.
• Courses for general education requirements: You can complete the Appeal General Education Requirements form (complete form online or PDF version) found on the one stop website by November 15 for approval during fall semester and April 15 for approval during spring semester. Several options apply:
  • 3 credits of GLBL 492, when completed successfully and transferred back to NDSU, will qualify for Intercultural Knowledge and Competency credit. Check the box for "Study Abroad Students—Intercultural Knowledge and Competency".
  • GLBL 492, when completed successfully and transferred back to NDSU, will qualify for Intercultural Knowledge and Competency credit. Check the box for "Study Abroad Students—Intercultural Knowledge and Competency".
  • For other courses and/or general education requirements, you must explain concisely how the proposed course will fit into the general education category description from the Undergraduate Bulletin. Check the box "Substitution of a course into a general education category" and complete the requirements listed on the form.
