Ethan Snow, Ph.D. To Speak About The Role Of Metacognition In Assessment

Learn how to create more value in your student assessments.

NDSU’s Office of Teaching and Learning will host a live webinar titled, The Role of Metacognition in Student Learning in Higher Education, on Monday, January 23, 2023, from 3 to 4 p.m.

Dr. Ethan Snow will address how some assessed performances in the classroom can lead to false confidence in a student’s understanding of the content. Snow examines how assessing student confidence can be an additional variable that provides benefits for understanding a variety of performance behaviors and ways to advise students. Dr. Stacy Duffield, director of the Office of Teaching and Learning stated that, “Dr. Snow’s session helps instructors explore ways to increase the value of their assessment practices for their students, not only resulting in better evidence of learning but also leveraging assessment in the learning process.”

Through this webinar you will obtain:

  • An overview of foundational metacognitive principles and empirical examples from years of data collection with different interventions.
  • Information on how frequent unconventional performances should be expected to occur in assessment outcomes measured only by the correctness of student responses.
  • Best practices for identifying metacognitive misalignment in student performances and assessment item or question analyses (data driven and non-data driven).
  • Practical interventions to improve teaching, learning, and assessment.
  • Information on the limitations and challenges for implementing metacognition-based assessment methods.
  • Insight into the future directions of this research. 

This webinar will host featured speaker, Ethan Snow, Ph.D., assistant professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Snow’s area of research is on this novel method for measuring knowledge, guiding remediation, and informing teaching and learning practices that operates on evaluating the alignment of students’ metacognition to their examination performances. His research continues to gain recognition and now involves multiple graduate students and institutional collaborations.
