Review the concept of empathy and the importance of empathy to leadership within educational settings. Topics covered will include the academic research on empathy, the relationship between empathy and leadership in educational settings, applied empathy in formal and informal educational leadership settings, and the relationship between empathy and creating more equitable educational settings. Leaders will be prompted to create leadership or teaching philosophies and personal development plans that center around empathy and equity. Participants will receive a certificate of completion.

Course Description:

The asynchronous, online course will review the concept of empathy and the importance of empathy to leadership within educational settings. Topics covered will include the academic research on empathy, the relationship between empathy and leadership in educational settings, applied empathy in formal and informal educational leadership settings, and the relationship between empathy and creating more equitable educational settings. Leaders will be prompted to create leadership or teaching philosophies and personal development plans that center around empathy and equity.

  1. define empathy and the body of scholarly literature that informs understanding of empathy,
  2. define the impact of empathy on higher education outcomes,
  3. take the perspective of the other, and,
  4. demonstrate empathy in informal and formal leadership settings.

About the Instructor: 

Laura Parson

Dr. Laura Parson is an assistant professor of educational and organizational leadership in the School of Education. She develops and facilitates workshops on empathy and applied empathy for educators and leaders in the military. She developed a conceptual framework for teaching empathy in the higher education classroom, is writing a book on empathy for educators, and created and taught a professional development course on empathy for K12 educators.
