How to Use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool

You may use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) to transfer in your tax information directly from the IRS website, if you are eligible. Use the following link for a video tutorial of the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.

DRT is available as soon as the FAFSA is available on October 1 each year.
Most but not all students and parents are eligible to use the DRT. To determine if you are eligible see below:

Am I eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool?
  • Are you/your parent(s) married but filing separately?
  • Did you/your parent(s) file a tax extension?
  • Did you/your parent(s) file a foreign tax return?
  • Did you/your parent(s) file your taxes electronically in the past 3 weeks?
  • Did you/your parent(s) file your taxes by paper in the past 11 weeks?

If you can answer NO to all of the above questions and have a valid Social Security Number, you/your spouse or your parent(s) should be able to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.

If you are eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval download process on the FAFSA, you may also go to the FAFSA website, studentaid.gov, click Start Here, and make a correction to your FAFSA by using the IRS Data Retrieval process. If this is successful, you may not have to provide a Tax Return Transcript OR signed Federal Tax Return. Use the following link for a video tutorial of the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.

How to Request a Tax Return Transcript from the IRS

If you are NOT eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, you and your spouse (if you are an independent student and married as of today) or you and your parent(s) whose income you used on the FAFSA must submit a Tax Return Transcript. Please note that a copy of your Federal IRS Tax Returns or an account transcript are NOT acceptable.

There are a variety of ways to request a Tax Return Transcript. See frequently asked questions
