Alternative Cow Replacement Decision Tool

To help producers determine whether or not they should keep their open cows, we developed a spreadsheet decision tool that allows producers to easily compare three different alternative open cow replacement scenarios:

• Selling an open cow and replace her with a purchased bred heifer.
• Selling an open cow and purchasing a younger (3-to-6-year-old) bred replacement cow.
• Retain, rebreed and keep the open cow in the herd.
