Video Instructions

Use these short videos to navigate through each tab of the spreadsheet.

1. Introduction and Instructions

This sheet provides a place for more permanent records referenced routinely over time to be stored, such as pasture locations or available medications. What is entered here will be used to provide options in dropdown menus elsewhere in the workbook or as a reference for record summaries.

2. Cattle Inventory

This sheet is the record of all cattle (by ID) on the operation and known information about them, such as herd status (active, dead or sold), RFID or registration number, type (cow, heifer, sire), current location on the operation, birth date, age, dam and sire, as well as purchase and sale details. This will serve as a reference for other sheets in the workbook, so accuracy is of utmost importance.

3. Breeding - Chute

This sheet is meant to be a blank sheet to be printed and brought to the chute with you during breeding season, whether using AI or sorting dams into natural service sire groups. This sheet automatically lists IDs of all females from Cattle Inventory in order, and the "Type," "Dam," "Sire" and "Age" columns will automatically fill with their associated information. An ID may appear red or yellow if the ID has died or been sold and does not need breeding records.

4. Breeding

This sheet provides a place to transfer and analyze herd breeding records for a given year. This sheet automatically lists all females (Mature Dams and Replacements) from the Cattle Inventory sheet in order, and the "Type," "Dam," "Sire" and "Age" columns will automatically fill with information from the Cattle Inventory sheet for each ID listed. An ID may appear red or yellow if the ID has died or been sold and does not need breeding records.

5. PG - Chute

This sheet is meant to be a blank sheet to be printed and brought to the chute with you on pregnancy check day for the herd. This sheet automatically lists all females (Mature Dams and Replacements) in the Cattle Inventory sheet in order while indicating if IDs have died or been sold from the herd. The “Age” and “Location” columns will automatically fill with information for each ID.

6. PG Results

This is a place to transfer pregnancy diagnosis records for a given year. The "Cycle" and "Predicted Calving" columns will calculate automatically if a female is pregnant and the gestational age ("Days" column) is filled. A pregnancy summary is given, including overall pregnancy rate (including AI, if applicable), average pregnancy rates by dam age, dam BCS, breeding location, sire and what cycle cattle conceived during the breeding season.

7. To Calve

This sheet is meant to be a record of all females that were confirmed pregnant and will be calving in the next calving season. A summary of the predicted calving season is given, with a breakdown of how many and which IDs are predicted to calve in each month of the upcoming calving season.

8. Blank Calving Book

This sheet is meant to be a blank sheet to be printed and brought to calving facilities to fill out as calves are born.

9. Calving Book

This sheet provides a place to transfer calving records for a given year. When a Dam ID is entered, information listed for that individual dam will automatically fill for "Predicted Calving," "Age" and "AI / NS" from the PG Results and Cattle Inventory sheets. Additionally, the "Calving Period" column will calculate automatically if a dam is 3+ years of age based on her calving date.

10. Wean-Chute

This sheet is meant to be a blank sheet to be printed and brought to the chute with you during weaning. This sheet automatically lists all calves from the Calving Book sheet in order if listed as "Live" in the Calving Book. The "Dam ID," "Calf Sex" and "Birth Date" columns will automatically fill with information from the Calving Book sheet for each Calf ID.

11. Weaning

The sheet provides a place to keep weaning records for a given calf crop. This sheet automatically lists all calves from the Calving Book sheet in order if listed as "Live" in the Calving Book with "Dam ID," "AI / NS," "Sire," "Dam Age," "Calf Sex," "Calf Birth Date," "Calving Period" and "Birth Weight" columns filled automatically with information from Calving Book and Cattle Inventory. Additionally, "Weaning Age," "% Dam Wt. Weaned," "Average Daily Gain" and "Adjusted 205d Weaning Wt." will calculate automatically if weaning weight is entered for a calf ID.

12. Treatment

This sheet is meant to be a record for all treatments in a given production season. The "Lot #," "Expiration Date" and "Withdrawal Days" columns will automatically fill with information entered on the Reference sheet. Additionally, "Withdrawal Date" and "Clear?" will calculate and fill automatically to easily indicate if an animal has met withdrawal standards.

13. Herd Summary

This sheet is meant to be a summary for herd records with comparison to state (North Dakota) and national (United States) averages. Cells will automatically change color in comparison to the state average or national average to indicate where the herd meets, exceeds or falls short of state and national averages. Unless a North Dakota average is unavailable, all records and color indicators will reference the North Dakota average.
